Hodge Close Quarry is a flooded slate quarry near Little Langdale, its sheer 150-foot walls and drowned arches making a striking reflection — from one angle the caverns are said to read as a skull, which is why photographers and film crews turn up. The edges are unfenced and the water is deep and bitterly cold, with a grim record among divers; the interior is for experienced climbers and divers only. Most people simply come to look from the top. Windermere station is about 10km east.
