Thorndon Hall is the Palladian mansion James Paine built in the 1760s for the Petre family, its parkland later reworked by Capability Brown into sweeping deer park and woodland. A fire gutted the house in 1878, and since the 1970s it’s been converted into private apartments, so the hall itself is off limits. Much of the wider historic parkland, though, survives as Thorndon country park, free to walk through, with the Boars Head a short drive away for afterwards.
