Places to explore in EssexEngland · East of England

Essex is a county of estuaries — the Blackwater, the Colne, the marshy flats of the Dengie — where London Clay meets the North Sea in mudflat and saltmarsh. Inland the boulder-clay farmland rises to Dedham and the Stour, the valley Constable painted. Colchester was Roman Camulodunum, the province's first capital, and its Norman keep rises on the vaults of a temple to Claudius. Norman work survives too at Hedingham Castle, and the great Jacobean house of Audley End sits near Saffron Walden. Walkers head for the ancient wood-pasture of Hatfield Forest or the crumbling cliffs of The Naze.
