A row of pastel beach huts lines the shore at Brightlingsea, an old sailing and oyster town at the mouth of the Colne where dinghies still race off the Cindery Island shore. There’s blue-flag bathing along the promenade and boat trips out onto the estuary in season. Great Bentley station is about 5km inland to the north-east.
