Bishop Cedd came from Lindisfarne to convert the East Saxons and, around 654, built this chapel on the sea wall at Bradwell — laying it across the ruined gateway of a Roman fort and reusing its brick and stone. Bare and barn-like inside, it is one of England’s oldest churches still in use. It stands alone on the marshes: park at the end of the lane and walk the last half-mile or so.
