Abberton Reservoir
Local highlightAbberton spreads across the farmland south of Colchester as the largest stretch of freshwater in Essex, and one of Europe’s more important wetlands for wildfowl — tens of thousands of ducks, geese and swans use it through the winter. Three hides look out over the water, with flat trails and an Essex Wildlife Trust visitor centre and café. Marks Tey station is about 8km to the north-west.
