At 80 feet, Layer Marney is the tallest Tudor gatehouse in the country — an outburst of patterned redbrick begun in the 1520s by Henry, Lord Marney, a courtier of Henry VIII who died in 1523 before it was finished. You can climb it for wide views over the Blackwater countryside on advertised open days. It stands south-west of Colchester, roughly 6km from Marks Tey station.
