Timber-framed houses crowd the streets of Coggeshall, an old wool and cloth town on the Blackwater. Its showpieces are Paycocke’s, a richly carved Tudor merchant’s house in the care of the National Trust, and the nearby Grange Barn — one of the oldest timber-framed buildings in Europe, raised in the 13th century for Coggeshall Abbey. Marks Hall Gardens lie a little to the north.
