Marks Hall, near Coggeshall, is a 200-acre arboretum with trees gathered from temperate regions across the world, set around a walled garden and a lake. Its oddest feature is Gondwanaland, a planting themed on the ancient southern supercontinent that includes what’s thought to be the largest grove of Wollemi pines in Europe — a “living fossil” conifer known only from fossils until a handful were found in an Australian gorge in 1994. It’s open daily, with an admission charge and a café by the lake.
