Braxted Park’s walled garden — reckoned the largest privately owned one in Essex — radiates from a central fountain into themed plots: an Italian garden, a black-and-white garden, mulberry trees among perennial borders. It’s mainly a private house used for weddings and corporate events, but the National Garden Scheme gets visitors in on a handful of days each year, with the head gardener on hand and teas laid on. Marks Hall Gardens & Arboretum is a few miles north near Coggeshall.
