Maldon has hand-harvested its sea salt since 1882, the flaky crystals now sold worldwide, and its Hythe Quay keeps a fleet of moored Thames sailing barges with their tan sails. The town climbs a low hill above the Blackwater, with a riverside park down at the quay. Beeleigh Abbey Gardens lie just upstream.
