Stow Maries Great War Aerodrome
Local highlightCome on one of the flying days to see it working: Stow Maries is Europe’s largest surviving First World War aerodrome, opened in 1916 to defend London against Zeppelin and Gotha raids. Around two dozen original Royal Flying Corps buildings still ring the grass airfield near Maldon — messes, workshops, the pilots’ ready room — and it’s open on advertised days for a charge.
