Most of Cistercian Coggeshall Abbey, founded around 1140, is now a private farmhouse — the monks’ east range and a vaulted corridor are built into Abbey Farm, and there’s no wandering round the cloister. What you can still get into is St Nicholas’ Chapel at the top of Abbey Lane, the abbey’s gate chapel of about 1220 and one of the earliest brick buildings in England since the Romans. It was a barn for three centuries before the parish bought it back in 1860, and it holds a service on the first Sunday of the month; otherwise it’s locked. The Essex Way runs past, and Coggeshall Grange Barn is ten minutes west.
