About 400 oak trees went into the frame of Prior’s Hall Barn at Widdington, dated by its tree rings to the mid-1400s. Inside it is aisled, meaning two rows of posts divide the floor into a wide central nave with a passage either side, and the roof rests on crown posts, central uprights that rise from the cross-beams to brace a beam running the length of the roof and support the rafters. The barn opens on selected days through the warmer months. Audley End House and Gardens and the town of Saffron Walden are both a few miles north.
