On the north side of Saffron Walden, Bridge End Garden is a run of seven linked Victorian gardens laid out by the Gibson family in the 19th century and carefully restored to their original design. There’s a walled garden, a Dutch garden with a sunken parterre, rose beds and a yew hedge maze — replanted in 1984 — with a viewing platform at its centre. It’s Grade II* listed and free to walk round most days of the year. Audley End station is about 3km to the south-west.
