Timber and Georgian houses climb the hill at Thaxted to a soaring parish church and a jettied medieval guildhall standing in the middle of the street. John Webb’s Windmill, a tower mill from the early 1800s, sits on the town’s edge. The composer Gustav Holst lived here for several years, and a summer music festival is still held in the church.
