Saffron Walden is a medieval market town named for the saffron crocus once farmed here, its older houses covered in pargeting — moulded plasterwork — and its common laid out with a turf maze. St Mary’s is the largest parish church in Essex, its spire the tallest in the county. Saffron Grange Vineyard is just outside town, and Audley End station lies about 3km south-west.
