Audley End began as one of the grandest Jacobean mansions in England, built on the site of a dissolved abbey and later trimmed to the still-vast house you see today. Capability Brown reshaped the surrounding parkland in the 1760s, and the grounds hold a formal parterre, a Victorian walled kitchen garden worked organically, and riverside walks. English Heritage runs it, with an admission charge; members go free. Audley End station is about 2km south, near Saffron Walden and its own Bridge End Garden.
