St Mary’s is the largest parish church in Essex, with the county’s tallest spire — a slender stone needle added in the 1830s to a largely Perpendicular church rebuilt through the 15th century. It stands at the top of Saffron Walden, the town named for the saffron crocus once grown in the fields around. Open to visitors; Audley End station is about 3km to the south-west.
