Named for the Bartlow Hills, the great Roman burial mounds just behind it, this restored 17th-century pub with rooms has held two AA rosettes every year since reopening and has ranked high in the Top 50 Gastropubs. It stands at the centre of tiny Bartlow, on the Cambridgeshire-Essex border, so book if you want to eat. Come with a walk up the tallest mound built in.
