Thaxted’s church carries a 181-foot stone spire, the tallest medieval one in Essex, which is why the building is nicknamed the Cathedral of Essex. Broad and light inside, mostly 14th- and 15th-century work, it crowns the hilltop town of Thaxted above the guildhall and a restored windmill. Open to visitors; Elsenham station is about 9km to the south-west.
