Mountfitchet Castle is a reconstructed Norman motte-and-bailey at Stansted Mountfitchet, rebuilt on its original earthworks with a Domesday-era village of huts and animals — deer, goats and geese wander freely among them, which makes it good with children. Open in season with an admission charge. The station is right beside it, a couple of hundred metres off, and the village windmill is a short walk away.
