Most of Much Hadham lies along one street that runs for about a mile and a half beside the little River Ash, between Bishop’s Stortford and Ware. Along it are 16th-century timber-framed cottages and grander Georgian brick, including Much Hadham Hall of the 1720s. The Bishops of London had a palace here for centuries; the present building, north of the church, dates from the early 1500s and is now private homes. St Andrew’s Church has carved heads of a king and queen by Henry Moore beside its west door, and the Forge Museum has Elizabethan wall paintings. Moore’s home and studios at Perry Green, a couple of kilometres south-east, are now Henry Moore Studios and Gardens.
