Scott's Grotto
Local highlightThe most extensive shell grotto in the country — six chambers dug into a Ware hillside and lined with flint, shells, coloured glass and fossils by the Quaker poet John Scott in the 1760s. It runs some 20 metres into the chalk. Grade I listed, and free to visit on its open days, though you’ll want a torch. It’s just off the centre of Ware, a few hundred metres from the station.
