Panshanger Park is Humphry Repton’s landscape, minus the house he designed it around: the 5th Earl Cowper called Repton in for a Red Book in 1799, and the house itself was sold off and knocked down by 1954, leaving Repton’s lakes, meadows and weir-broadened stretch of the River Mimram intact. Tarmac and the Herts and Middlesex Wildlife Trust now run it as a nature reserve, with waymarked trails for walking, cycling and riding. Look out for the Great Oak in the Broadwater area, reckoned one of the oldest oaks in England. Free to walk in daily, roughly 8am to dusk; Hertford is close by to the east.
