Ware is an old malting town on the River Lea, its back gardens still lined with 18th-century summer gazebos that lean out over the water. Dug into a hillside above the town is Scott’s Grotto, six flint-and-shell chambers made by the poet John Scott in the 1760s. The station is a short walk from the riverside.
