Places to explore in HertfordshireEngland · East of England

Chalk underlies most of Hertfordshire, tilting down from the wooded Chiltern scarp in the west toward the London clay. Beech hangers and commons cloak the high ground at Ashridge Commons and Woods, above the market town of Tring and its Victorian reservoirs. The Romans built one of their largest British cities at Verulamium, whose walls and ditch still ring the meadows below St Albans Cathedral. Great houses stud the county too, from Jacobean Hatfield House to the Gothic pile and rock-festival parkland of Knebworth.
