The Garden House holds one of the finest Japanese gardens in the country, begun in 1905 by Herbert Goode, a London glass and china merchant, after a trip to Japan. He shipped back plants and hired the Japanese designer Seyemon Kusumoto, laying out lakes, bridges, stone lanterns and a tea house across flat fields at the edge of Cottered. Grade II* registered, and open only on rare charity days. Baldock station is about 9km north-west.
