One of Hertfordshire’s tallest church spires rises over Ashwell, a north-county village of well-preserved timber-framed houses. Inside St Mary the Virgin, medieval graffiti scratched into the tower walls includes a drawing of Old St Paul’s and lines lamenting the Black Death. The chalk springs at the edge of the village feed the young River Cam.
