Capability Brown laid out the parkland at Southill Park in 1777, around a Palladian house remodelled soon after by Henry Holland for the Whitbread brewing family, who still live there today. Much of Holland’s furniture and the paintings he chose for the rooms remain in place. It’s a private home, but the garden — rose garden, sunken garden, glasshouse and all — opens one day a year for the National Garden Scheme.
