Places to explore in BedfordshireEngland · East of England
Chalk and greensand shape this small county between the Chiltern scarp and the clay vales of the Great Ouse. The northern edge of the chalk rears up at Dunstable Downs, the highest point in Bedfordshire and a magnet for kites and gliders, with the Iron Age ramparts of Sharpenhoe Clappers on a beech-crowned spur close by. The Greensand Ridge runs east past the deer park and great house of Woburn Abbey and the safari acres of Whipsnade. Older ground survives at Totternhoe Knolls, where medieval quarries cut the local clunch stone.
