Two enormous airship hangars stand on the flat land south-east of Bedford, among the largest buildings in the country. The first went up in the First World War, and it was here the R101 was assembled — the great airship that floated out in 1929 and crashed a year later on its maiden flight towards India, killing most aboard. No 1 shed builds airships again today. Best seen from the roads and footpaths around Cardington village.
