Luton Hoo is a grand estate landscaped by Capability Brown for the Prime Minister Lord Bute in the 1760s, who brought in Robert Adam to build the mansion; diamond magnate Julius Wernher bought it in 1903 and filled it with an extraordinary art and jewellery collection. The mansion itself became a hotel, golf course and spa, now closed for a major multi-year redevelopment with no reopening date confirmed. The walled garden is run separately and stays open through the season — no need to book, just turn up on a Wednesday between May and September. Someries Castle is a couple of kilometres away.
