George Bernard Shaw lived at this Arts and Crafts house in Ayot St Lawrence from 1906 until his death in 1950, and left it to the nation with the rooms much as he used them. At the bottom of the garden stands his revolving writing hut, built on a turntable so he could follow the sun; he nicknamed it “London” to put off callers. National Trust, paid entry; Welwyn North station is about 5km east.
