St Albans grew from the Roman town of Verulamium, whose walls and mosaics survive in the park beside the River Ver. The medieval cathedral, raised over the shrine of Alban, England’s first Christian martyr, rises above the old streets, and Ye Olde Fighting Cocks by the park is often cited among the country’s oldest pubs. The City station is under a kilometre east of the centre.
