An octagonal brick building beside Verulamium Park in St Albans, the Fighting Cocks began as a dovecote and has long been cited among the oldest pubs in England — a claim impossible to pin down, though the low-beamed, sunken bars feel every bit the part. It closed briefly in 2022 and reopened under a new team. The Roman remains and the cathedral are a short walk uphill.
