St Stephen’s was founded in AD 948 by Ulsinus, an abbot of St Albans, as one of three churches built to receive pilgrims heading for the abbey shrine. It sits on the line of the old Roman road, Watling Street, on the southern edge of St Albans, in an acre of tree-filled churchyard. Open access, and St Albans Abbey station is a short walk away.
