George Bernard Shaw wrote here for more than forty years, at Shaw’s Corner, where he kept a revolving writing hut in the garden. The hamlet has two churches: the medieval St Lawrence, deliberately left as a picturesque ruin, and a Greek-temple replacement built in 1778 for Sir Lionel Lyde to a design by Nicholas Revett. Both stand at the end of narrow lanes with little else around.
