Capability Brown laid out this unusual octagonal walled garden in the 1760s for the Earl of Bute, using the extra internal walls to trap sunlight for fruit and vegetables. It fell derelict by the 2000s and has since been brought back by a team of volunteers, the Walled Garden Project. Open Wednesdays only, from May to September, with a small entry fee that includes a tour of the garden and its old service buildings. The rest of the Luton Hoo estate is currently closed for redevelopment, but the walled garden runs independently of that.
