Whipsnade Tree Cathedral
Local highlightAfter the First World War, Edmund Blyth planted trees in the outline of a medieval cathedral here as a memorial to friends killed in the fighting — grass avenues for the nave and transepts, and ‘walls’ and ‘chapels’ of different species. Planting began in 1932, and Blyth gave the ten-acre garden to the National Trust in 1960. Free and open, up on the Dunstable Downs above Whipsnade.
