Beech woods and chalk downs on the Chilterns edge.
Open accessNational Trust land — free to wander
Woods, chalk downland and open common spread over some 5,000 acres along the Chiltern ridge at Ashridge, on the Hertfordshire–Buckinghamshire border. At the centre stands the Bridgewater Monument, a granite column raised in 1832 to the canal-building third Duke of Bridgewater, with steps to a viewing platform on open days. Bluebells fill the beechwoods in spring and the commons draw walkers year-round. National Trust land, free to roam; Tring station is about 4km west.
