A granite column raised in 1832 above the Ashridge beeches, in memory of the 3rd Duke of Bridgewater — the “Canal Duke” who set off Britain’s canal-building boom. In summer you can climb the 172 steps inside for a long view across the Chilterns; the wooded estate around it is open all year. It stands a short walk above Aldbury, with Tring station a couple of kilometres to the south-west.
