Four reservoirs dug on the Chiltern edge from 1802 to feed the summit of the canal below — originally the Grand Junction, now part of the Grand Union. The basins, Wilstone, Marsworth, Startops End and Tringford, are now a Site of Special Scientific Interest and one of the better birdwatching spots in southern England, with paths around the water. They lie just west of Tring.
