Laid out in the 1820s and 30s by Robert, 3rd Lord Ongley, the Swiss Garden was built as a piece of theatre, its winding paths and ponds turning each corner into a fresh view. A little Swiss-style cottage sits among the trees, along with a grotto and fernery and other Regency follies, and it survives as one of the most complete gardens of its kind in the country. Now part of the Shuttleworth estate at Old Warden, it’s close to Warden Abbey Vineyard and the Hare and Hounds; Biggleswade station is about 5km east. It’s open daily, on a ticket that covers the whole Shuttleworth Collection.
