Old Warden was laid out as a model estate village in the early nineteenth century by Lord Ongley, who gave its thatched cottages their picture-book Swiss look; the estate later passed to the Shuttleworth family. On its doorstep are the Regency Swiss Garden and Old Warden aerodrome, home to the Shuttleworth Collection of vintage aircraft. The Hare and Hounds is the village pub.
