A chapel built onto the side of Flitton church to hold two hundred and fifty years of the de Grey family's carved tombs
A cross-shaped chapel opens off the north side of Flitton’s parish church, built to hold the tombs of the de Grey family, who lived a couple of miles away at Wrest Park Gardens. Henry Grey, 6th Earl of Kent, added a single burial chamber here around 1605, and a descendant, the 1st Duke of Kent, enlarged it into today’s cross shape a century later. Inside are 17 carved monuments running from 1614 to 1859, among them a baroque tomb showing the duke in Roman armour flanked by his two wives. The mausoleum only opens on set days through the year, with volunteers on hand to talk through the family’s history.
