Wrest Park keeps something rare in England: a formal garden in the French style, laid out by Henry, Duke of Kent, in the early 1700s and never swept away by the landscape fashion that came after. A long straight canal, the Long Water, runs from the house to Thomas Archer’s domed baroque pavilion at its far end. Capability Brown softened the outer canals in the 1750s without disturbing the geometry. English Heritage looks after the Grade I gardens now; Flitwick station is about 6km to the west.
