John Bunyan was born in Elstow parish in 1628 and baptised in the abbey church here, and the green he played on still has its late-medieval Moot Hall, a timber market house now kept as a museum. Tudor cottages line one side. The surviving nave of the old Benedictine nunnery church stands close by — see Elstow Abbey. Bedford St Johns station is a mile or so to the north.
