Humphry Repton drew up one of his most ambitious Red Books for the 6th Duke of Bedford here in 1805, and the present dukes have spent the last two decades bringing his designs back to life — from the folly grotto to the Cone House and a striking Chinese-style pavilion, finished in 2011. The pleasure grounds hold a hornbeam maze, herbaceous borders and a woodland garden — though the abbey and gardens have been closed for restoration since 2019, with no confirmed reopening date; the deer park that has grazed here for centuries stays open and free to walk. Ridgmont station is about 4km to the north.
