Hertfordshire’s last surviving post mill, a white weatherboarded mill of about 1720, stands on a low medieval mound beside the road near Ardeley. Restored to working order, it opens on a handful of afternoons through the summer, when you can climb inside to see the timber machinery. Entry is charged on open days, and the nearest station, Baldock, is a fair drive off.
